OK, so my question is this: could it be possible to reconstruct the original data file based on nothing but the MD5? If every file creates a totally distinct MD5, shouldn't you be able to recreate, for instance, a 52MB wav file from just the XXK md5 file, making lengthy downloads obsolete?

No. md5 is a one-way hash. If you really want more background I suggest Bruce Schneier's Applied Cryptography.
